When my wife and I decided that we wanted to put some funds into non-paper assets, we decided on timber land. We contacted Tom Smith and met with him one evening. We knew nothing about this kind of investment and Tom patiently explained the ins and outs and how this sort of thing worked. We discussed our desires and Tom translated those into a specific type of property that we should be looking for, considering our budget. Because of our ages, we needed to find something that would be harvestable in a relatively short time. One thing you find out pretty quickly is that someone is willing to sell you a piece of timberland every hour of every day. If an agent or even an acquaintance finds out that you want timber, they will have something for you to go look at the next day. People kept asking me why I had not bought anything yet. They seemed to think it was like buying a car. You just go pick out what you want. Tom weeded out properties that did not fit our goals. We kissed a lot of frogs as we looked at different properties. They looked better on paper than they did in person. Eventually we found exactly the right piece at exactly the right price. There were a number of unforeseen difficulties in closing the deal, but Tom was right there every step of the way during the negotiating process and, with his help, we closed on the perfect investment. We could not be happier. The next time we want to buy or sell some property, Tom will be our man.

I searched the state of Mississippi for 10 years trying to find the perfect tract of land that would fit my families needs. Each tract I looked at there was something that didn't fit. I contacted Tom Smith. I explained to him what we were looking for and he smiled and said I'll find it. He changed the subject and asked me about my family, we talked about his family, we talked about hunting, business and several other things over the next hour. I was thinking he must not be very busy to take this much time with me. Tom began his career in Real Estate in Madison in 2002. He takes a business approach to his real estate practice, as he spent 27 years in executive management positions with companies including Wal-Mart, and Home Depot as well as serving as CEO of other retail companies throughout the country.

Tom has achieved the highly coveted Accredited Land Consultant (ALC) designation from the Realtor Land Institute in November of 2006, which makes him one of the few Realtors in the Southeast U.S. holding this designation and qualifying him to assist you with all of your land needs. Ellen Brand Smith is originally from Chicago, Illinois and graduated from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, in 1988 with a BS in Economics. She then moved out to California, where she earned her MBA from Pepperdine University and began her business career with a Fortune 500 company in Los Angeles. Ellen later formed her own company, Brand Merchandising, which became a leading service company in the Western United States.

Ellen has lived all over the country, but has lived in Madison, MS with her husband, Tom, and their two daughters (one is married and one is in college) for 20 years. Mississippi is also where she discovered her passion for the real estate business and the local outdoor lifestyle. Together, Ellen and Tom opened Tom Smith Land & Homes to be the area’s premier real estate brokerage. She manages the residential side of the business with a focus on homes and commercial properties throughout the region. Ellen has been selling real estate for 20 years to satisfied clients, periodically flipping houses, and has sold properties all over the State.

Haley Hickman Belden

Haley Belden is a native of Brandon, MS. She graduated from Northwest Rankin High School and earned a B.S. in Elementary and Special Education from the University of Mississippi. She taught sixth grade at Northwest Rankin Middle School in Rankin County for 12 years. Haley has been a stay-at-home mom for nine years and is excited about a career change with real estate.

Prior to obtaining her real estate license, Haley was very involved with the Rankin County School District as a parent volunteer and fundraiser. She served on the Northshore Elementary PTO board for four years as secretary and president. She was honored as “Parent of the Year” two years in a row. Haley also served on the Rankin County Bond Issue Committee for a year to help fund improvements for Rankin County Schools and build a new Northwest Rankin High School. She currently serves on the Northwest Rankin High School Softball Board and is very active with the Junior League of Jackson.

Haley and her husband, David, reside in the reservoir area of Brandon, MS. They share four children together. Alese lives in Birmingham, AL. Avery is a student at Mississippi State University. Brooks and Grace are students at Northwest Rankin High School. They all enjoy travel, sporting events, and spending time together.

Colby Watson

Colby’s love for the outdoors is what drew him to Tom Smith Land and Homes. Born and raised in Pearl, MS, he has had a love for the outdoors since his dad took him hunting for the first time. He attended Pearl High School and graduated in 2006. After high school, he went to Meridian Community College on a soccer scholarship. He has deep roots in the outdoors; he is a dedicated duck and deer hunter. His love for the outdoors is where he gets his passion for the land and being in nature. In 2010, he started a duck guiding business in the MS delta and ran it successfully until getting married in 2014. At that time, he formed a lawn and landscape business in Central MS as the owner and operator.

Charlie Heinsz

Charles C. Heinsz Jr. (Charlie) was born in Shelby, MS a small community just north of Cleveland. He graduated from Bayou Academy and then attended the University of Mississippi, but always had a longing to return to “Blue Cane” the family farm, where he still lives today. Charlie’s father Charles C. Heinsz, Sr. and grandfather C.E. Heinsz relocated from their farm near Crowley, Louisiana in 1950 to what is now his family farm near Shelby, in Bolivar County. They were one of the first five or six families to grow a rice crop in “The Delta”.

For 38 years, Charlie farmed with his family growing rice, soybeans and wheat. In 1980 he married the love of his life, Beth Hackney Heinsz, and together they raised three children Brittany, Brigham and Charles C. Heinsz III (Tres). Charlie and Beth are proud grandparents to a beautiful little girl, Charlie Kerr.

As a life-long native of Bolivar County and a seasoned real estate professional, Charlie recognizes and values the trust his clients place in him and strives daily to exceed their expectations. Sarah Reese is a native of Greenwood, MS. After graduating Pillow Academy, Sarah Reese earned a degree in Dietetics/Nutrition from both Ole Miss and Delta State University.

Brett was born and raised in Lauderdale County, MS just south of Meridian. “The morning of July 2^nd, 2021, was when I saw a Facebook post by Bruce West, whom I had known for many years and worked with in the Emmaus Walk Ministry, saying that he had changed careers, was now a Realtor, and if anyone needed to buy or sell property, he’d be glad to talk to them about representation. I texted him that I was indeed interested in selling my home at Brownspur. Bruce and Gwendolyn lived about ten miles south of me in Hollandale, just down the street from my brother Beau. He called back that afternoon and made an appointment to come by Monday to look at my homestead, which consisted of a big two-story 1898 Plantation Home, with nearly 6000 sq. ft. under roof and an 1800 sq. ft. guest house connected by a covered walkway, all on six acres, including an old-fashioned sand-bottomed Swimming Hole with a shooting range behind it. Betsy and I had listed Brownspur several times in the past few years after all our kids got out from underfoot, intending to move to smaller quarters in our Golden Years, but had never gotten a serious offer. She had passed away suddenly the week after our 55^th Anniversary, six months before the Covid-19 pandemic hit. I viewed that as an opportunity to catch it and die, to go be with Betsy, so had done absolutely nothing to the house and yard in over two years since her death. Bruce advised me to go with a “Buy-As-Is” approach, and we signed an agreement for representation Tuesday morning. He e-mailed me Thursday morning that he was showing it to a couple at 5:30 that afternoon. Monday morning he called to say that he had an offer, so I met him early Tuesday. The couple had offered less than we had listed it for, but three other people had contacted him over the weekend to say they were interested in looking at Brownspur. What did I want to do? "Let’s make them a counter-offer, halfway the difference,” I suggested. He nodded and dialed where we stood in the parking lot of the Double Quik gas station in Leland. He never got off the phone: “They took it,” he exclaimed! I had no idea how much paperwork was involved by so many parties from North Carolina to Nashville, Tennessee, to Leland, Greenwood, Cleveland, Brownspur, to Sumner where I now live, re-married to Cindy, Betsy’s former Ole Miss roommate. Bruce took care of dotting all the i’s and crossing all the t’s, thank the Lord. We closed on August 24^th. What a fantastic experience it was, selling my home on the plantation I’d grown up on for 77 years, through my Realtor and Friend, Bruce West!” Robert N.

Chad Wilson grew up in Jackson, MS and spent most of his time as a child and young adult helping his father raise cattle on his 3,000 acre farm in Madison County. Clay was born and raised in the small town of Rolling Fork, in the Mississippi Delta. At the age of fourteen, his family moved to Vicksburg where he attended St Aloysius High School. Anthony Steen

Anthony was born in Bolivar County, but his family moved shortly after to Clarksdale, MS. He spent his primary educational and athletic years attending and playing sports at Lee Academy. As a child, he played baseball, football, basketball, soccer and even threw shot put and disc for track. After graduating in 2009, Anthony continued his education and athletic career for the next five years at the University of Alabama on a football scholarship. He majored in Health Environmental Science and completed his bachelor’s degree and was a part of two SEC Championship and three National Championship teams with the Crimson Tide. After college, Anthony played for the Arizona Cardinals and the Miami Dolphins in the National Football League for 4 years until he decided to retire and come back to the Mississippi Delta where he grew up.

Growing up, Anthony was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved spending time helping his grandfather on the farm growing cotton and soybeans. His father and grandfather helped instill the importance of and a love for taking care of the land and wildlife around him. He enjoys all types of hunting from deer, duck, and turkey, to hogs, frogs, and pheasant. After retiring from the NFL, Anthony knew he wanted to come back home to the land he loved so much as a child.

Anthony currently resides in Tallahatchie County where he farmed soybeans with his family for a few years. After much deliberation and praying, Anthony knew it was time to start a new career path. He was certain he wanted to find a way to share his passion for the outdoors with others while staying true to his country roots. Daniel Willoughby was born at a Naval hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia. His father spent 26 years in the United States Navy. During this time, Daniel traveled all over the world and country before his family decided to settle down in Jackson, Mississippi. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and was awarded the Marshall of Liberal Arts. He worked for 12 years in the Medical Sales industry before beginning his career in Right of Way where he started his own business, Reservoir Consultants. Danny is no stranger to real estate since he has been doing real estate acquisition and relocation for 17 years. He understands the importance of real estate and their values.

Daniel married his high school sweetheart, Amy and moved to Brandon, Mississippi. They continue to reside there with their two sons, Ian and Patrick. Daniel is an avid outdoorsman who loves hunting and fishing with his family.

David moved to Warren County, Mississippi in 1994 and spent his high school years at St Aloysius High School in Vicksburg. After graduation, he went to Hinds Community College and then on to Belhaven University playing baseball and football. David worked in the restaurant business during college and continued for 24 years working in all aspects of the industry from management, ownership, to commercial food sales. He enjoyed meeting people and making friends from all over the world; no matter where David is he seems to run in to someone he calls a friend! Doyes Holland

Registered Forester

Doyes was born and raised in Hamilton, Alabama. He obtained a B.S. in Forestry from Mississippi State University in 1975. Ten years later, he completed a Master of Forestry with emphasis in forest taxation also from Mississippi State. Doyes’ forestry career began in 1977 and continued for 40+ years, with much of his career with Weyerhaeuser Company as a Timber Buyer, Road Manager and lastly as Harvest Planner until his retirement in 2018.

Doyes and his wife Kay are long time residents of Starkville and avid MSU Bulldog fans. They have attended New Covenant Church for more than 40 years with their three children. They currently own and operate Bops Frozen Custard in Starkville. For many years, Doyes had a small beef cattle operation in the Bell School House community where his children learned a strong work ethic and a love for the outdoors. When not at work, you may find Doyes at his tree farm in Choctaw County working on food plots or at the family’s lake house on Smith Lake in Arley, Alabama. Kadero Edley is from the small town of Raymond, MS, but currently resides in Grenada, MS. After high school he received scholarships to play football at MS Gulf Coast Community College followed by Belhaven University. Kadero graduated from MGCCC in 2012 and from Belhaven University with a B.S. in Sports Medicine/Exercise Science in 2015. Mike Odom

Mike is a lifelong resident of Madison County where he was born and raised in Flora, Mississippi and attended Tri-County Academy. After graduation, he attended Mississippi State University where he studied Animal Science. He later attended and graduated from Belhaven College with a bachelor’s degree in business. Mike’s sales career began in the construction equipment industry with Ditch Witch, selling trenching and underground equipment. He then spent the better part of 25 years in the construction and agricultural industries where he worked as a territory manager, regional manager, sales manager, and location manager with major equipment manufacturers such as Atlas Copco, John Deere, and Caterpillar. During this time, Mike learned the importance of customer care and always putting the customer first.

Abby Abernathy

Abby grew up in Archer City, Texas, and currently resides in Scott, MS. While still a teenager, Abby began investing in real estate in her hometown and now owns multiple rental properties.

Prior to joining Tom Smith Land and Homes, she worked at Holt Lunsford Commercial in Dallas, Texas, where she specialized in representing tenants in lease negotiations for their industrial warehouse. Anna Houston is a Mississippi native with deep roots in the fertile soil of the Mississippi Delta. Although her family hails from the Delta, she grew up in the welcoming community of Pearl, MS. She graduated from Pearl High School and continued her education at Ole Miss.

Anna is married to Joel Houston, and together, they have two wonderful children, Huntlee and Collins. Their home is on the family farm in Sylvarena, MS, in the heart of Smith County.

Dale Wilds

Dale is a retired Military Officer and Afghanistan War veteran. He is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy and served over 20 years as a pilot. He has advanced academic degrees in Business and Leadership and spent many years of his service in high-profile leadership positions. Dale is a native of Vicksburg, MS and graduate of St. Aloysius High School. He is also a Federal Aviation Administration certified small UAS pilot and commercial airline pilot.

Aside from his passion for service to our nation, Dale has always had a passion to serve others and “pay it forward” wherever possible. Throughout his time in the military, Dale helped service members, friends and family with the purchase and sale of their own properties. He also bought and sold his own personal and investment properties in several different states including here in Mississippi and Louisiana.

Mike Jackson

Mike is a native Mississippian who grew up in Ackerman. A graduate of Mississippi State University, Mike has a wide range of professional experiences that greatly benefit his clients. From working for the MS Dept. of Health as a County Environmentalist early in his career, then owning a construction company, to being an active real estate agent/investor, Mike has a unique perspective that allows him to relate well to anyone who is in the market to buy or sell, whether for an investment or for personal use. Mike and his wife Angela were married in 2019. Between them, they have 5 adult children and 6 grandchildren. Additionally, there are 9 more “grands” that call him Papa Jack, for which his is extremely proud. In his spare time, Mike enjoys traveling, barbecuing, hunting, and playing golf.
