When my wife and I decided that we wanted to put some funds into non-paper assets, we decided on timber land. We contacted Tom Smith and met with him one evening. We knew nothing about this kind of investment and Tom patiently explained the ins and outs and how this sort of thing worked. We discussed our desires and Tom translated those into a specific type of property that we should be looking for, considering our budget. Because of our ages, we needed to find something that would be harvestable in a relatively short time. One thing you find out pretty quickly is that someone is willing to sell you a piece of timberland every hour of every day. If an agent or even an acquaintance finds out that you want timber, they will have something for you to go look at the next day. People kept asking me why I had not bought anything yet. They seemed to think it was like buying a car. You just go pick out what you want. Tom weeded out properties that did not fit our goals. We kissed a lot of frogs as we looked at different properties. I searched the state of Mississippi for 10 years trying to find the perfect tract of land that would fit my families needs. Each tract I looked at there was something that didn't fit. I contacted Tom Smith. I explained to him what we were looking for and he smiled and said I'll find it. Tom is the Principal Broker of Tom Smith Land and Homes. Tom Smith is a native Mississippian from Meridian and attended Mississippi State University. Tom began his career in Real Estate in Madison in 2002. He takes a business approach to his real estate practice, as he spent 27 years in executive management positions with companies including Wal-Mart, and Home Depot as well as serving as CEO of other retail companies throughout the country.
Tom has achieved the highly coveted Accredited Land Consultant (ALC) designation from the Realtor Land Institute in November of 2006, which makes him one of the few Realtors in the Southeast U.S. holding this designation and qualifying him to assist you with all of your land needs. He is also an APEX award winner as being named one of the top performing Brokers in America by The Realtors Land Institute. He specializes in recreational tracts, timber investment, commercial investment properties and 1031 Tax Free Exchanges. He is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys hunting, fishing, boating and golf.
Tom and his wife of 25 years, Ellen, reside in Lake Caroline (Madison), MS. They have two beautiful daughters, with Kit being married and living in Memphis, TN and Samantha, who is a Junior at College of Charleston in Charleston, SC.

Ellen Brand Smith is originally from Chicago, Illinois and graduated from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, in 1988 with a BS in Economics. She then moved out to California, where she earned her MBA from Pepperdine University and began her business career with a Fortune 500 company in Los Angeles. Ellen later formed her own company, Brand Merchandising, which became a leading service company in the Western United States.

Allyson Mize
Allyson was born and raised in Flora, MS. She graduated from Tri-County and Holmes Community College. She recently moved back to Madison after 17 years in Oxford, MS.

Haley Hickman Belden
Haley Belden is a native of Brandon, MS. She graduated from Northwest Rankin High School and earned a B.S. in Elementary and Special Education from the University of Mississippi. She taught sixth grade at Northwest Rankin Middle School in Rankin County for 12 years. Haley has been a stay-at-home mom for nine years and is excited about a career change with real estate.
Prior to obtaining her real estate license, Haley was very involved with the Rankin County School District as a parent volunteer and fundraiser. She served on the Northshore Elementary PTO board for four years as secretary and president. She was honored as “Parent of the Year” two years in a row. Haley also served on the Rankin County Bond Issue Committee for a year to help fund improvements for Rankin County Schools and build a new Northwest Rankin High School. She currently serves on the Northwest Rankin High School Softball Board and is very active with the Junior League of Jackson.
Haley and her husband, David, reside in the reservoir area of Brandon, MS. They share four children together. Alese lives in Birmingham, AL. Avery is a student at Mississippi State University. Brooks and Grace are students at Northwest Rankin High School. They all enjoy travel, sporting events, and spending time together.

Colby Watson
Colby’s love for the outdoors is what drew him to Tom Smith Land and Homes. Born and raised in Pearl, MS, he has had a love for the outdoors since his dad took him hunting for the first time. He attended Pearl High School and graduated in 2006. After high school, he went to Meridian Community College on a soccer scholarship. He has deep roots in the outdoors; he is a dedicated duck and deer hunter. His love for the outdoors is where he gets his passion for the land and being in nature. In 2010, he started a duck guiding business in the MS delta and ran it successfully until getting married in 2014. At that time, he formed a lawn and landscape business in Central MS as the owner and operator.
Colby, his wife Katie, and their son Bodie reside in Pearl. Their free time is spent on the water or in the woods. During the summer, they enjoy spending time at their lake house on Eagle Lake. They love being around friends and family and making memories.

“The dealings with Preston Smith on the sale of my small piece of property in Walthall County, MS can be summarized in three words: Knowledge, Professionalism, and Courtesy. Preston exhibited excellent knowledge of the small hunting property market and what people were looking for in that type property. He had a good knowledge of the market demands and expectations and set a reasonable price. Really demonstrated his knowledge during the closing when the buyer's agent did not appear to be very knowledgeable at all. He handled all of our listing and contract dealings, communications and closing in a very professional manner. Everything was done timely and communicated well. One thing that made Preston really stand out was our initial dealings. Preston called while I had the property 'for sale by owner' and introduced himself and communicated his desire to help sell but was never pushy in his discussion. Michael graduated from Mississippi State University with a B.S. in Forestry in 1983. Since that time he has enjoyed a career as a Registered Forester, and a Real Estate Broker in Mississippi since 1986. Charles C. Heinsz Jr. (Charlie) was born in Shelby, MS a small community just north of Cleveland. He graduated from Bayou Academy and then attended the University of Mississippi, but always had a longing to return to “Blue Cane” the family farm, where he still lives today. Charlie’s father Charles C. Heinsz, Sr. and grandfather C.E. Heinsz relocated from their farm near Crowley, Louisiana in 1950 to what is now his family farm near Shelby, in Bolivar County. They were one of the first five or six families to grow a rice crop in “The Delta”.
For 38 years, Charlie farmed with his family growing rice, soybeans and wheat. In 1980 he married the love of his life, Beth Hackney Heinsz, and together they raised three children Brittany, Brigham and Charles C. Heinsz III (Tres). Charlie and Beth are proud grandparents to a beautiful little girl, Charlie Kerr.
As a life-long native of Bolivar County and a seasoned real estate professional, Charlie recognizes and values the trust his clients place in him and strives daily to exceed their expectations. His enthusiastic, “can-do” attitude and caring nature is ideal for identifying each client’s desires and skillfully guiding them to fulfill their real estate goals. Anthony Steen
Anthony was born in Bolivar County, but his family moved shortly after to Clarksdale, MS. He spent his primary educational and athletic years attending and playing sports at Lee Academy. As a child, he played baseball, football, basketball, soccer and even threw shot put and disc for track. After graduating in 2009, Anthony continued his education and athletic career for the next five years at the University of Alabama on a football scholarship. He majored in Health Environmental Science and completed his bachelor’s degree and was a part of two SEC Championship and three National Championship teams with the Crimson Tide. After college, Anthony played for the Arizona Cardinals and the Miami Dolphins in the National Football League for 4 years until he decided to retire and come back to the Mississippi Delta where he grew up.
Growing up, Anthony was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved spending time helping his grandfather on the farm growing cotton and soybeans. His father and grandfather helped instill the importance of and a love for taking care of the land and wildlife around him. He enjoys all types of hunting from deer, duck, and turkey, to hogs, frogs, and pheasant. After retiring from the NFL, Anthony knew he wanted to come back home to the land he loved so much as a child.
Anthony currently resides in Tallahatchie County where he farmed soybeans with his family for a few years. After much deliberation and praying, Anthony knew it was time to start a new career path. He was certain he wanted to find a way to share his passion for the outdoors with others while staying true to his country roots. As a college athlete, Anthony learned hard work, dedication, discipline, trust, and how to work with others. Bill was born and raised on a farm in Scott County, Mississippi. His family farm had cotton, soy beans, cattle and hogs. It was there on his family‘s farm that he gained knowledge and respect for the land that God provided. Blake Sasser
Blake was born and raised in Lincoln County, MS in the small town of Bogue Chitto. After high school, he knew he wanted a career helping people. Blake completed his paramedic degree and served as a paramedic in Lincoln, Copiah, Franklin, and Lawrence Counties. “The morning of July 2nd, 2021, was when I saw a Facebook post by Bruce West, whom I had known for many years and worked with in the Emmaus Walk Ministry, saying that he had changed careers, was now a Realtor, and if anyone needed to buy or sell property, he’d be glad to talk to them about representation. I texted him that I was indeed interested in selling my home at Brownspur. Bruce and Gwendolyn lived about ten miles south of me in Hollandale, just down the street from my brother Beau. He called back that afternoon and made an appointment to come by Monday to look at my homestead, which consisted of a big two-story 1898 Plantation Home, with nearly 6000 sq. ft. under roof and an 1800 sq. ft. guest house connected by a covered walkway, all on six acres, including an old-fashioned sand-bottomed Swimming Hole with a shooting range behind it. Betsy and I had listed Brownspur several times in the past few years after all our kids got out from underfoot, intending to move to smaller quarters in our Golden Years, but had never gotten a serious offer. She had passed away suddenly the week after our 55th Anniversary, six months before the Covid-19 pandemic hit. I viewed that as an opportunity to catch it and die, to go be with Betsy, so had done absolutely nothing to the house and yard in over two years since her death. Bruce advised me to go with a “Buy-As-Is” approach, and we signed an agreement for representation Tuesday morning. He e-mailed me Thursday morning that he was showing it to a couple at 5:30 that afternoon. Monday morning he called to say that he had an offer, so I met him early Tuesday. The couple had offered less than we had listed it for, but three other people had contacted him over the weekend to say they were interested in looking at Brownspur. What did I want to do? "Let’s make them a counter-offer, halfway the difference,” I suggested. He nodded and dialed where we stood in the parking lot of the Double Quik gas station in Leland. He never got off the phone: “They took it,” he exclaimed! I had no idea how much paperwork was involved by so many parties from North Carolina to Nashville, Tennessee, to Leland, Greenwood, Cleveland, Brownspur, to Sumner where I now live, re-married to Cindy, Betsy’s former Ole Miss roommate. Bruce took care of dotting all the i’s and crossing all the t’s, thank the Lord. We closed on August 24th. What a fantastic experience it was, selling my home on the plantation I’d grown up on for 77 years, through my Realtor and Friend, Bruce West!” Robert N.

Kyle Carpenter
Kyle Carpenter grew up in Baldwyn, MS. After high school he graduated from NEMCC with an Associate’s degree in Machine Tool & Die. Chad Wilson grew up in Jackson, MS and spent most of his time as a child and young adult helping his father raise cattle on his 3,000 acre farm in Madison County. Chad attended Callaway High School before heading to Hinds Community College where he studied electronics. He began a law enforcement career in Lafayette, LA and then moved back home to continue that career in Brandon, MS. He worked his way up in ranks to Assistant Police Chief and stayed in that position for 15 years before retiring in 2010. Retiring at such a young age he set goals to become a land realtor to follow his dreams of being involved in land once again. “Several years ago, as my parents’ health began to fail, I thought I had a plan to easily carry out their last wishes with the property they left to my two brothers and myself. Eli Ferguson
Eli was born and raised in Brookhaven, MS and is a graduate of Brookhaven High school. He attended Copiah-Lincoln Community College and then completed his education at the University of Mississippi. While attending Ole Miss he earned a degree in Business administration with an emphasis in Real Estate and Finance. His strong passion for Real Estate started and an early age in life and that has never wavered. During his college years he spent time working with a land surveyor while at Co-Lin and then working with a residential contractor while living in Oxford and attending Ole Miss. Emerson is a fifth generation native of the Mississippi Delta dating back to the late 1800’s. With strong family ties in the Indianola Commercial Real Estate Market, Emerson manages and consults both clients and prospective clients on real estate opportunities in and around Sunflower County, MS.

During this time, Daniel traveled all over the world and country before his family decided to settle down in Jackson, Mississippi. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and was awarded the Marshall of Liberal Arts. He worked for 12 years in the Medical Sales industry before beginning his career in Right of Way where he started his own business, Reservoir Consultants. Danny is no stranger to real estate since he has been doing real estate acquisition and relocation for 17 years. He understands the importance of real estate and their values.

David Belden
David moved to Warren County, Mississippi in 1994 and spent his high school years at St Aloysius High School in Vicksburg. After graduation, he went to Hinds Community College and then on to Belhaven University playing baseball and football. David worked in the restaurant business during college and continued for 24 years working in all aspects of the industry from management, ownership, to commercial food sales. He enjoyed meeting people and making friends from all over the world; no matter where David is he seems to run in to someone he calls a friend! Doyes Holland
Doyes was born and raised in Hamilton, Alabama. He obtained a B.S. in Forestry from Mississippi State University in 1975. Ten years later, he completed a Master of Forestry with emphasis in forest taxation also from Mississippi State. Doyes’ forestry career began in 1977 and continued for 40+ years, with much of his career with Weyerhaeuser Company as a Timber Buyer, Road Manager and lastly as Harvest Planner until his retirement in 2018.
Doyes and his wife Kay are long time residents of Starkville and avid MSU Bulldog fans. They have attended New Covenant Church for more than 40 years with their three children. They currently own and operate Bops Frozen Custard in Starkville. For many years, Doyes had a small beef cattle operation in the Bell School House community where his children learned a strong work ethic and a love for the outdoors. When not at work, you may find Doyes at his tree farm in Choctaw County working on food plots or at the family’s lake house on Smith Lake in Arley, Alabama. Kadero Edley
Kadero Edley is from the small town of Raymond, MS, but currently resides in Grenada, MS. After high school he received scholarships to play football at MS Gulf Coast Community College followed by Belhaven University. Kadero graduated from MGCCC in 2012 and from Belhaven University with a B.S. in Sports Medicine/Exercise Science in 2015. By playing football all his life, it taught Kadero that hard work, discipline, dedication, and trust are the keys to being successful on a team.
Kadero is an avid outdoorsman that believes in scouting for that next big buck after the season should begin in the spring, and that everyone should experience the nervous tremors after hearing a mature turkey gobble thirty yards away. Nicole Newell
Nicole Newell is a native of Lincoln County, MS. She grew up in Loyd Star, a wonderful community approximately 10 miles outside of Brookhaven. As a child, cheerleading, playing sports and dancing at Showstoppers took up much of her time. After graduation from Loyd Star High School, Nicole continued her education at Co-Lin where she was a member of the dance team. Robert Smith
Robert Smith was born and raised in the small South Louisiana town of St. Francisville. He moved to Waco, Texas after high school, and returned to his generational roots of South Mississippi. He has spent the last 15+ years in Mississippi, learning and loving the outdoors. Growing up in a split family, Robert spent the weekends with his mother working cattle on his stepfather’s 800+ acre farm and the weekends with his father fishing and hunting whatever happened to be in season.

Tara Walker Smith
Tara Walker Smith is a native of Wilkinson County, MS. After graduating high school from Centreville Academy, she earned her cosmetology license. Later, she entered the medical field where she spent the majority of her career managing medical clinics. Tara and her husband, Preston, the Managing Broker of our Brookhaven office, have been married for more than 25 years. They are residents of Summit and have four children and two grandchildren. Steve Martens is a lifelong native of the Jackson, MS area. He graduated from Jackson Prep and went on to graduate from the University of MS with a degree in Finance and Real Estate. He began his real estate career in 2014 after spending 23 years serving clients as a commercial insurance agent and partner in his firm.

Travis Smith
Travis Walker Smith was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, but has lived most of his life in the Greater Jackson area in Mississippi. After graduating from Canton Academy in 2018, Travis began his electrical career, where he worked while completing electrician trade school. Travis, his wife Megan, and their two dogs (Blue & Sam) live in the heart of Brandon, MS. They enjoy spending quality time with family and friends and love taking weekend getaways when possible.
From a young age, Travis has been a devoted sportsman. He enjoys all things outdoors, including hunting, fishing, golfing, etc. He has desired a career in the outdoors for a long time and could not be more thrilled to be part of the Tom Smith Land and Homes team in Madison, Mississippi.

“Trinity Webb absolutely exceeded our expectations with our recent land purchase. We started looking at properties online and Trinity was the listing agent on one of the first properties we were interested in. She spent the Saturday with us showing multiple properties, none of which was “the one”. But, after listening to our “want list”, she found exactly what we wanted. Trinity Webb, a native Mississippian, comes from a family that has been deeply involved in the real estate industry for generations. Trinity began her career in 2013 selling residential property and has successfully managed and oversaw renovations of hundreds of rental properties in Mississippi.
