When my wife and I decided that we wanted to put some funds into non-paper assets, we decided on timber land. We contacted Tom Smith and met with him one evening. We knew nothing about this kind of investment and Tom patiently explained the ins and outs and how this sort of thing worked. We discussed our desires and Tom translated those into a specific type of property that we should be looking for, considering our budget. Because of our ages, we needed to find something that would be harvestable in a relatively short time. One thing you find out pretty quickly is that someone is willing to sell you a piece of timberland every hour of every day. If an agent or even an acquaintance finds out that you want timber, they will have something for you to go look at the next day. People kept asking me why I had not bought anything yet. They seemed to think it was like buying a car. You just go pick out what you want. Tom weeded out properties that did not fit our goals. We kissed a lot of frogs as we looked at different properties. They looked better on paper than they did in person. Eventually we found exactly the right piece at exactly the right price. There were a number of unforeseen difficulties in closing the deal, but Tom was right there every step of the way during the negotiating process and, with his help, we closed on the perfect investment. I searched the state of Mississippi for 10 years trying to find the perfect tract of land that would fit my families needs. Each tract I looked at there was something that didn't fit. I contacted Tom Smith. I explained to him what we were looking for and he smiled and said I'll find it. He changed the subject and asked me about my family, we talked about his family, we talked about hunting, business and several other things over the next hour. I was thinking he must not be very busy to take this much time with me. (Little did I know he sold more land in Ms. than anybody else) before we left I looked at Tom and said 'don't forget what I'm looking for' he laughed and said 'I will find it'. An avid outdoorsman, Tom enjoys hunting, fishing, boating, and golf in his free time. He and his wife of 29 years, Ellen, make their home in Lake Caroline (Madison), Mississippi, and are proud parents of two daughters—one residing in Lakeland, Tennessee, and the other in Charleston, South Carolina.

Ellen Brand Smith is originally from Chicago, Illinois and graduated from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, in 1988 with a BS in Economics. She then moved out to California, where she earned her MBA from Pepperdine University and began her business career with a Fortune 500 company in Los Angeles. Ellen later formed her own company, Brand Merchandising, which became a leading service company in the Western United States.

Ellen has lived all over the country, but has lived in Madison, MS with her husband, Tom, and their two daughters for 23 years. Mississippi is also where she discovered her passion for the real estate business and the local outdoor lifestyle. Together, Ellen and Tom opened Tom Smith Land & Homes to be the area’s premier real estate brokerage. She manages the residential side of the business with a focus on homes and commercial properties throughout the region. Ellen has been selling real estate for 23 years to satisfied clients, periodically flipping houses, and has sold properties all over the State.

Haley Hickman Belden

Haley Belden is a native of Brandon, MS. She graduated from Northwest Rankin High School and earned a B.S. in Elementary and Special Education from the University of Mississippi. She taught sixth grade at Northwest Rankin Middle School in Rankin County for 12 years. Haley has been a stay-at-home mom for nine years and is excited about a career change with real estate.

Prior to obtaining her real estate license, Haley was very involved with the Rankin County School District as a parent volunteer and fundraiser. She served on the Northshore Elementary PTO board for four years as secretary and president. She was honored as “Parent of the Year” two years in a row. Haley also served on the Rankin County Bond Issue Committee for a year to help fund improvements for Rankin County Schools and build a new Northwest Rankin High School. She currently serves on the Northwest Rankin High School Softball Board and is very active with the Junior League of Jackson.

Haley and her husband, David, reside in the reservoir area of Brandon, MS. They share four children together. Alese lives in Birmingham, AL. Avery is a student at Mississippi State University. Brooks and Grace are students at Northwest Rankin High School. They all enjoy travel, sporting events, and spending time together.

Chad Wilson grew up in Jackson, MS and spent most of his time as a child and young adult helping his father raise cattle on his 3,000 acre farm in Madison County. Daniel Willoughby was born at a Naval hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia. His father spent 26 years in the United States Navy. During this time, Daniel traveled all over the world and country before his family decided to settle down in Jackson, Mississippi. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and was awarded the Marshall of Liberal Arts. After graduation, he went to Hinds Community College and then on to Belhaven University playing baseball and football. “We are officially homeowners! This has been the longest four months, but it is so worth it! Bruce West and Charlie Heinsz have been the best help with this and we couldn’t thank them enough! All the prayers have been answered for this home and now it’s moving time!” Ashley and Hestin

“The morning of July 2^nd, 2021, was when I saw a Facebook post by Bruce West, whom I had known for many years and worked with in the Emmaus Walk Ministry, saying that he had changed careers, was now a Realtor, and if anyone needed to buy or sell property, he’d be glad to talk to them about representation. I texted him that I was indeed interested in selling my home at Brownspur. Bruce and Gwendolyn lived about ten miles south of me in Hollandale, just down the street from my brother Beau. He called back that afternoon and made an appointment to come by Monday to look at my homestead, which consisted of a big two-story 1898 Plantation Home, with nearly 6000 sq. ft. under roof and an 1800 sq. ft. guest house connected by a covered walkway, all on six acres, including an old-fashioned sand-bottomed Swimming Hole with a shooting range behind it. Betsy and I had listed Brownspur several times in the past few years after all our kids got out from underfoot, intending to move to smaller quarters in our Golden Years, but had never gotten a serious offer. She had passed away suddenly the week after our 55^th Anniversary, six months before the Covid-19 pandemic hit. I viewed that as an opportunity to catch it and die, to go be with Betsy, so had done absolutely nothing to the house and yard in over two years since her death. Bruce advised me to go with a “Buy-As-Is” approach, and we signed an agreement for representation Tuesday morning. He e-mailed me Thursday morning that he was showing it to a couple at 5:30 that afternoon. Monday morning he called to say that he had an offer, so I met him early Tuesday. The couple had offered less than we had listed it for, but three other people had contacted him over the weekend to say they were interested in looking at Brownspur. What did I want to do? "Let’s make them a counter-offer, halfway the difference,” I suggested. He nodded and dialed where we stood in the parking lot of the Double Quik gas station in Leland. He never got off the phone: “They took it,” he exclaimed! I had no idea how much paperwork was involved by so many parties from North Carolina to Nashville, Tennessee, to Leland, Greenwood, Cleveland, Brownspur, to Sumner where I now live, re-married to Cindy, Betsy’s former Ole Miss roommate. Bruce took care of dotting all the i’s and crossing all the t’s, thank the Lord. We closed on August 24^th. What a fantastic experience it was, selling my home on the plantation I’d grown up on for 77 years, through my Realtor and Friend, Bruce West!” Robert N.

Anthony was born in Bolivar County, but his family moved shortly after to Clarksdale, MS. He spent his primary educational and athletic years attending and playing sports at Lee Academy. As a child, he played baseball, football, basketball, soccer and even threw shot put and disc for track. After graduating in 2009, Anthony continued his education and athletic career for the next five years at the University of Alabama on a football scholarship. He majored in Health Environmental Science and completed his bachelor’s degree and was a part of two SEC Championship and three National Championship teams with the Crimson Tide. After college, Anthony played for the Arizona Cardinals and the Miami Dolphins in the National Football League for 4 years until he decided to retire and come back to the Mississippi Delta where he grew up.

Growing up, Anthony was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved spending time helping his grandfather on the farm growing cotton and soybeans. His father and grandfather helped instill the importance of and a love for taking care of the land and wildlife around him. He enjoys all types of hunting from deer, duck, and turkey, to hogs, frogs, and pheasant. Robert R. Ballinger resides in Hollandale, MS. Rob and his wife Sherry, married 35 years, are both active members of the Hollandale Methodist Church. Doyes was born and raised in Hamilton, Alabama. He obtained a B.S. in Forestry from Mississippi State University in 1975. Ten years later, he completed a Master of Forestry with emphasis in forest taxation also from Mississippi State. Kadero Edley is from the small town of Raymond, MS, but currently resides in Grenada, MS. After high school he received scholarships to play football at MS Gulf Coast Community College followed by Belhaven University. Dale is a retired Military Officer and Afghanistan War veteran. He is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy and served over 20 years as a pilot. Marissa Chrestman

Born and raised in Sneads, Florida, a charming small town nestled in the heart of the Florida Panhandle, Marissa grew up surrounded by farmland, the serene shores of Lake Seminole, and the Apalachicola River. It is there that she developed a love for the outdoors and the lifestyle it supports. Growing up in North Florida, Marissa spent her time playing sports, hunting, fishing, and going to the beach with her family.

In 2019, Marissa received a scholarship to Chipola College where she played softball and graduated with her Associate Degree. In 2021, Marissa was offered a Division I scholarship to continue her education and softball career at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida where she played for three and a half years. Marissa served as team captain for two years, showcasing her leadership and dedication both on and off the field. Josh Wren

Josh’s love for real estate has always been evident even if it took a few years and a circuitous path to get to Tom Smith Land and Homes. Josh was raised in Raymond, MS where he went to Central Hinds Academy from 5k until his graduation in 1996. Josh then went to Hinds Community College on a baseball scholarship then on to the University of Mississippi where he graduated in 2000 with a degree in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. After graduating from the University of Mississippi, Josh was accepted into dental school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center where he attended from 2001 until graduation in 2005. He was then accepted into pediatric dental residency at the University of Kentucky where he served as chief resident and received his pediatric dental certificate in 2007. Upon completion of his scholastic endeavors, Josh started Wren Pediatric Dentistry in Brandon, MS in 2007 where he ran his dental clinic until 2021 when orthopedic and neurological conditions prevented him from practicing dentistry any longer.

Josh has been a biology teacher and assistant football coach at Central Hinds Academy since 2022. Josh resides in Madison, MS with his wife Lexie and their children, Emory and Elliot. In their free time, the Wrens enjoy spending as much time as possible outdoors, traveling, or at their second home in Oxford rooting for the Rebels.

Erin Monsour is a proud lifelong resident of Brandon, Mississippi. She graduated from Brandon High School, where she was a student-athlete and a member of the soccer team. After high school, Erin began her college journey at Holmes Community College in Ridgeland before transferring to Mississippi State University. Leslie Pinnix

Leslie was born and raised in Benoit, Mississippi. He graduated in 1995 from St. Joseph High School in Greenville, Mississippi. He then furthered his education at Mississippi State University obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Agronomy.
Leslie started his professional career at Farmer’s National Company. He was a licensed real estate agent in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas. He then went to work as a Senior Acquisitions Director and Farm Manager for AgCoA. Within his time at AgCoA, he sourced and managed over 50,000 acres in the Mid-South valued at 350 million dollars. Upon the sale of AgCoA to the Bill Gates Foundation, he then went to work for Sower Farmland as a Senior Acquisitions Director and was able to source over 165 million dollars of investment grade farmland for its investors.
Leslie currently resides in Senatobia, Mississippi with his wife Searcy and their four children. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with family and friends enjoying the outdoors. Growing up an avid hunter and fisherman, his biggest interest now is hunting, fishing, and playing golf with his children.
