I searched the state of Mississippi for 10 years trying to find the perfect tract of land that would fit my families needs. Each tract I looked at there was something that didn't fit. I contacted Tom Smith. I explained to him what we were looking for and he smiled and said I'll find it. He changed the subject and asked me about my family, we talked about his family, we talked about hunting, business and several other things over the next hour. I was thinking he must not be very busy to take this much time with me. When my wife and I decided that we wanted to put some funds into non-paper assets, we decided on timber land. We contacted Tom Smith and met with him one evening. We knew nothing about this kind of investment and Tom patiently explained the ins and outs and how this sort of thing worked. We discussed our desires and Tom translated those into a specific type of property that we should be looking for, considering our budget. Because of our ages, we needed to find something that would be harvestable in a relatively short time. One thing you find out pretty quickly is that someone is willing to sell you a piece of timberland every hour of every day. A native of Meridian, Mississippi, Tom attended Mississippi State University and launched his real estate career in Madison in 2002.

With a strong background in executive leadership, Tom brings a strategic business mindset to real estate, having previously served in top management roles with major companies such as Wal-Mart and Home Depot, as well as holding CEO positions for retail organizations across the U.S.

Tom is one of the few Realtors in the Southeastern U.S. to hold the prestigious Accredited Land Consultant (ALC) designation from the Realtor Land Institute, which he earned in 2006. He is also a recipient of the APEX Award, recognizing him among the top-performing land brokers in America. Ellen Brand Smith is originally from Chicago, Illinois and graduated from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, in 1988 with a BS in Economics. She then moved out to California, where she earned her MBA from Pepperdine University and began her business career with a Fortune 500 company in Los Angeles. Ellen later formed her own company, Brand Merchandising, which became a leading service company in the Western United States.

Ellen has lived all over the country, but has lived in Madison, MS with her husband, Tom, and their two daughters for 23 years. Mississippi is also where she discovered her passion for the real estate business and the local outdoor lifestyle. Together, Ellen and Tom opened Tom Smith Land & Homes to be the area’s premier real estate brokerage. She manages the residential side of the business with a focus on homes and commercial properties throughout the region. Ellen has been selling real estate for 23 years to satisfied clients, periodically flipping houses, and has sold properties all over the State.

Haley Hickman Belden

Haley Belden is a native of Brandon, Mississippi. She graduated from Northwest Rankin High School and earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary and Special Education from the University of Mississippi. Haley taught sixth grade at Northwest Rankin Middle School in Rankin County for 12 years before transitioning into real estate, where she has now been serving clients for over three years.

Haley brings a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a passion for helping others to every transaction. She enjoys all aspects of real estate and takes pride in guiding clients through each step of the buying and selling process. Haley especially enjoys working alongside her husband, David, combining their knowledge and experience to better serve their clients.

Prior to obtaining her real estate license, Haley was deeply involved in the Rankin County School District as a parent volunteer and fundraiser. She served on the Northshore Elementary PTO board for four years as both secretary and president and was honored as “Parent of the Year” two years in a row. She also served on the Rankin County Bond Issue Committee, helping support improvements to local schools, including the development of a new Northwest Rankin High School. She previously served on the Northwest Rankin High School Softball Board.

Haley and her husband, David, reside in the Reservoir area of Brandon, Mississippi, and share four children. Alese is a student at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Avery is a student at Mississippi State University. Brooks is a student-athlete at Northeast Mississippi Community College, where he plays football, and Grace is a student-athlete at Mississippi College, where she plays softball. As a family, they enjoy traveling, attending sporting events, and spending time together.

Bill was born and raised on a farm in Scott County, Mississippi. His family farm had cotton, soy beans, cattle and hogs. It was there on his family‘s farm that he gained knowledge and respect for the land that God provided. During his high school years, Bill’s understanding and love of the farm grew as he began showing cattle and hogs at local livestock shows. After high school, he graduated from Mississippi State University and spent many years as a CPA. During this time as a CPA, Bill’s heart remained on the outdoors, so, in 1999, Bill began a lawn service business. Daniel Willoughby was born at a Naval hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia. His father spent 26 years in the United States Navy. During this time, Daniel traveled all over the world and country before his family decided to settle down in Jackson, Mississippi. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and was awarded the Marshall of Liberal Arts. He worked for 12 years in the Medical Sales industry before beginning his career in Right of Way where he started his own business, Reservoir Consultants. Danny is no stranger to real estate since he has been doing real estate acquisition and relocation for 17 years. He understands the importance of real estate and their values.

David moved to Warren County, Mississippi in 1994 and spent his high school years at St Aloysius High School in Vicksburg. After graduation, he went to Hinds Community College and then on to Belhaven University playing baseball and football. David worked in the restaurant business during college and continued for 24 years working in all aspects of the industry from management, ownership, to commercial food sales. He enjoyed meeting people and making friends from all over the world; no matter where David is he seems to run in to someone he calls a friend! Michael graduated from Mississippi State University with a B.S. in Forestry in 1983. Since that time he has enjoyed a career as a Registered Forester, and a Real Estate Broker in Mississippi since 1986. He held a license as a Certified General Real Estate Appraiser in Mississippi for a portion of that time. He has assisted private landowners in timber, farm and wildlife land management and sales for over thirty years. He has served as President of Halfacre Consulting Inc. working out of Louisville, Mississippi.

He retired from the Right of Way Division of the Mississippi Department of Transportation in 2014 with 29 years as a staff appraiser, review appraiser, and forester.

Tom and his wife, Veronica, are active within The First Baptist Church New Albany. Tom is an avid outdoorsman and is involved with the Trail Life USA Troop MS-356. “The morning of July 2^nd, 2021, was when I saw a Facebook post by Bruce West, whom I had known for many years and worked with in the Emmaus Walk Ministry, saying that he had changed careers, was now a Realtor, and if anyone needed to buy or sell property, he’d be glad to talk to them about representation. I texted him that I was indeed interested in selling my home at Brownspur. Bruce and Gwendolyn lived about ten miles south of me in Hollandale, just down the street from my brother Beau. He called back that afternoon and made an appointment to come by Monday to look at my homestead, which consisted of a big two-story 1898 Plantation Home, with nearly 6000 sq. ft. under roof and an 1800 sq. ft. guest house connected by a covered walkway, all on six acres, including an old-fashioned sand-bottomed Swimming Hole with a shooting range behind it. Betsy and I had listed Brownspur several times in the past few years after all our kids got out from underfoot, intending to move to smaller quarters in our Golden Years, but had never gotten a serious offer. She had passed away suddenly the week after our 55^th Anniversary, six months before the Covid-19 pandemic hit. I viewed that as an opportunity to catch it and die, to go be with Betsy, so had done absolutely nothing to the house and yard in over two years since her death. Bruce advised me to go with a “Buy-As-Is” approach, and we signed an agreement for representation Tuesday morning. He e-mailed me Thursday morning that he was showing it to a couple at 5:30 that afternoon. Monday morning he called to say that he had an offer, so I met him early Tuesday. The couple had offered less than we had listed it for, but three other people had contacted him over the weekend to say they were interested in looking at Brownspur. What did I want to do? "Let’s make them a counter-offer, halfway the difference,” I suggested. He nodded and dialed where we stood in the parking lot of the Double Quik gas station in Leland. He never got off the phone: “They took it,” he exclaimed! I had no idea how much paperwork was involved by so many parties from North Carolina to Nashville, Tennessee, to Leland, Greenwood, Cleveland, Brownspur, to Sumner where I now live, re-married to Cindy, Betsy’s former Ole Miss roommate. Bruce took care of dotting all the i’s and crossing all the t’s, thank the Lord. We closed on August 24^th. What a fantastic experience it was, selling my home on the plantation I’d grown up on for 77 years, through my Realtor and Friend, Bruce West!” Robert N.

Bruce West was born and raised in Drew, Mississippi, in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. He graduated from North Sunflower Academy and went on to attend Mississippi Delta Community College, where he was a member of the football team. Bruce later earned a degree in Agronomy from Mississippi State University.

He and his wife, Gwendolyn, have lived in Hollandale, Mississippi, for over 40 years. They are proud parents of two children and grandparents to five wonderful grandchildren. Both are active members of the Hollandale United Methodist Church.

Bruce has spent the majority of his career in retail agriculture, serving as a sales agronomist and in various managerial roles. He is a Certified Crop Advisor, recognized by the American Society of Agronomy, and previously served as president of the organization’s Mississippi chapter. He also holds a Mississippi Consultant License in three categories.

In 2024, Bruce earned the prestigious Accredited Land Consultant (ALC) designation from the Realtor Land Institute. He is a recipient of the APEX Award, recognizing him as one of the top-performing land agents in the United States. Additionally, he holds broker licenses in both Mississippi and Arkansas.

Anthony Steen, ALC

Anthony was born in Bolivar County, but his family moved shortly after to Clarksdale, MS. He spent his primary educational and athletic years attending and playing sports at Lee Academy. As a child, he played baseball, football, basketball, soccer and even threw shot put and disc for track. After graduating in 2009, Anthony continued his education and athletic career for the next five years at the University of Alabama on a football scholarship. He majored in Health Environmental Science and completed his bachelor’s degree and was a part of two SEC Championship and three National Championship teams with the Crimson Tide. After college, Anthony played for the Arizona Cardinals and the Miami Dolphins in the National Football League for 4 years until he decided to retire and come back to the Mississippi Delta where he grew up.

Growing up, Anthony was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved spending time helping his grandfather on the farm growing cotton and soybeans. His father and grandfather helped instill the importance of and a love for taking care of the land and wildlife around him. He enjoys all types of hunting from deer, duck, and turkey, to hogs, frogs, and pheasant. After retiring from the NFL, Anthony knew he wanted to come back home to the land he loved so much as a child.

Anthony currently resides in Tallahatchie County where he farmed soybeans with his family for a few years. After much deliberation and praying, Anthony knew it was time to start a new career path. He was certain he wanted to find a way to share his passion for the outdoors with others while staying true to his country roots. Emerson is a fifth generation native of the Mississippi Delta dating back to the late 1800’s. With strong family ties in the Indianola Commercial Real Estate Market, Emerson manages and consults both clients and prospective clients on real estate opportunities in and around Sunflower County, MS.

Doyes was born and raised in Hamilton, Alabama. He obtained a B.S. in Forestry from Mississippi State University in 1975. Ten years later, he completed a Master of Forestry with emphasis in forest taxation also from Mississippi State. Doyes’ forestry career began in 1977 and continued for 40+ years, with much of his career with Weyerhaeuser Company as a Timber Buyer, Road Manager and lastly as Harvest Planner until his retirement in 2018.

Doyes and his wife Kay are long time residents of Starkville and avid MSU Bulldog fans. They have attended New Covenant Church for more than 40 years with their three children. They currently own and operate Bops Frozen Custard in Starkville. For many years, Doyes had a small beef cattle operation in the Bell School House community where his children learned a strong work ethic and a love for the outdoors. When not at work, you may find Doyes at his tree farm in Choctaw County working on food plots or at the family’s lake house on Smith Lake in Arley, Alabama. Doyes hopes to use his real estate and timberland background and experiences to help other families make their own memories outdoors. Rob Ballinger

Robert R. Ballinger resides in Hollandale, MS. Rob and his wife Sherry, married 35 years, are both active members of the Hollandale Methodist Church. They have two daughters, Shelby Miller (Hayes) of Leland, MS and Sarah Brantley (Brayden) of Lake Village, AR. Rob received a Bachelor of Science degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Management from Arkansas Tech University in 1989. He worked for Delta Wildlife as Field Operations Director from 1990-1997. Rob is currently on staff at Wildlife Mississippi and has been employed there since 1997 as the Wetlands Coordinator, focusing mainly on restoration efforts concerning Wetlands Reserve Easements. Kadero Edley

Kadero Edley is from the small town of Raymond, MS, but currently resides in Grenada, MS. After high school he received scholarships to play football at MS Gulf Coast Community College followed by Belhaven University. Kadero graduated from MGCCC in 2012 and from Belhaven University with a B.S. in Sports Medicine/Exercise Science in 2015. By playing football all his life, it taught Kadero that hard work, discipline, dedication, and trust are the keys to being successful on a team.

Kadero is an avid outdoorsman that believes in scouting for that next big buck after the season should begin in the spring, and that everyone should experience the nervous tremors after hearing a mature turkey gobble thirty yards away. Leslie Pinnix

Leslie was born and raised in Benoit, Mississippi. He graduated in 1995 from St. Joseph High School in Greenville, Mississippi. He then furthered his education at Mississippi State University obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Agronomy.
Leslie started his professional career at Farmer’s National Company. He was a licensed real estate agent in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas. He then went to work as a Senior Acquisitions Director and Farm Manager for AgCoA. Within his time at AgCoA, he sourced and managed over 50,000 acres in the Mid-South valued at 350 million dollars. Upon the sale of AgCoA to the Bill Gates Foundation, he then went to work for Sower Farmland as a Senior Acquisitions Director and was able to source over 165 million dollars of investment grade farmland for its investors.
Leslie currently resides in Senatobia, Mississippi with his wife Searcy and their four children. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with family and friends enjoying the outdoors. Growing up an avid hunter and fisherman, his biggest interest now is hunting, fishing, and playing golf with his children.
Leslie learned the meaning of hard work growing up as a grandson of a Mid-South Ag Pilot, where he spent most of his summers which lead to his current overall work ethic. Dale is a retired Military Officer and Afghanistan War veteran. He is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy and served over 20 years as a pilot. He has advanced academic degrees in Business and Leadership and spent many years of his service in high-profile leadership positions. Dale is a native of Vicksburg, MS and graduate of St. Aloysius High School. He is also a Federal Aviation Administration certified small UAS pilot and commercial airline pilot.

Josh Wren

Josh’s love for real estate has always been evident even if it took a few years and a circuitous path to get to Tom Smith Land and Homes. Josh was raised in Raymond, MS where he went to Central Hinds Academy from 5k until his graduation in 1996. Josh then went to Hinds Community College on a baseball scholarship then on to the University of Mississippi where he graduated in 2000 with a degree in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. After graduating from the University of Mississippi, Josh was accepted into dental school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center where he attended from 2001 until graduation in 2005. He was then accepted into pediatric dental residency at the University of Kentucky where he served as chief resident and received his pediatric dental certificate in 2007. Upon completion of his scholastic endeavors, Josh started Wren Pediatric Dentistry in Brandon, MS in 2007 where he ran his dental clinic until 2021 when orthopedic and neurological conditions prevented him from practicing dentistry any longer.

Josh has been a biology teacher and assistant football coach at Central Hinds Academy since 2022. Josh resides in Madison, MS with his wife Lexie and their children, Emory and Elliot. In their free time, the Wrens enjoy spending as much time as possible outdoors, traveling, or at their second home in Oxford rooting for the Rebels.
